Iran to celebrate Saadi Shirazi Commemoration Day

The first day of Ordibehesht is marked in the Iranian calendar as the national commemoration day of Abu-Muhammad Muslih al-Din bin Abdallah Shirazi also known as Saadi Shirazi, the famous Persian poet.

Every year, on the day of Saadi's commemoration, ceremonies and celebrations are held throughout Iran as well as in Saadi's hometown Shiraz where he is laid to rest.  

This year to mark Saadi Day, a webinar is to be organized by the Iranian Society of Cultural Works and Luminaries with contributions from the Embassy of Iran in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

As one of the greatest figures of classical Persian literature, Saadi was a master of lyric poetry and used the subtlest meanings in his poems in the simplest words. This earned him the nickname 'Master of Speech’.

Saadi's best-known works are Bustan (The Orchard) and Gulistan (The Rose Garden), which have been translated into many languages.

Sadi was introduced to the generation of Iranians with the following verses which are also inscribed on a large hand-made carpet installed on the wall of a meeting room in the United Nations building in New York.

Human beings are members of a whole,

In creation of one essence and soul,

If one member is afflicted with pain,           

Other members uneasy will remain,          

If you've no sympathy for human pain,           

The name of human you cannot retain.
